Yes! More of Manhattan pictures! But you just cant get enough of it. This is one of my favorite locations to shoot. I have been here at different times- afternoon, evening, night…and then I thought I haven’t seen a sunrise yet. Facing west looking at the downtown skyline as the sun rose from behind me should be an interesting experience. So there I was- at 5 am in the morning ready to be captivated. No doubt I was!
My rendezvous with this location reminds me of Sir John Suckling’s “The Constant Lover”.The poet mocked love in this poem from early 1600s. There are many interpretations of what he wrote- some say he was referring to shallowness in love and that the character loved longer only because he was intrigued by her beauty. Some say it took him only 3 days to fall in love- a rather short time and hoped it want not as short. Well, I have my own fun interpretation. I think “The Constant Lover” refers to 2 types of individuals.
Type 1: A constant lover is one “who constantly falls in love!” 3 days on one thing or object or a person, then comes along something more intriguing and he is in love all over again.
Or Type 2: A constant lover is one “who constantly is in love”. You fall in love and that love is all you needed. Seasons change and time flies but he is constantly in love with the same person.
So why am I on this literary retreat today? Though I firmly believe in type 2 constant lover in my personal life, there is one place where things get a bit complicated. New York City! I don’t know whether I am constantly in love with it, or actually I keep falling in love all over again! For once I think I want to be type 1- just to experience the thrill of new romance every time I experience something here- new or old. This is one spot where I am a constant lover! The golden rays of morning sun, falling onto the skyscrapers in the background of blue hues- aah in love all over again! The night shot is from the same location but a different angle. I took it a few years ago when I first visited this place. Since then, its been a new affair every time I go.
For those of you who do not recollect or know:
The Constant Lover by Sir John Suckling (1609-1642)
Out upon it, I have lov’d
Three whole days together;
And am like to love three more,
If it prove fair weather.
Time shall molt away his wings
Ere he shall discover
In such whole wide world again
Such a constant lover.
But the spite on’t is, no praise
Is due at all to me:
Love with me had made no stays
Had it any been but she.
Had it any been but she
And that very face,
There had been at least ere this
A dozen dozen in her place.
