Drowning in Heights

Are you afraid of heights? You might not have acrophobia, but I am sure if you stand on top of a skyscraper it will definitely make you nervous. That was what I was expecting as I went up to the top of Empire State building. As I stepped towards the edge of viewing area, I focused in the far distance and slowly lowered my vision, hoping to acquaint myself to the height. But as I looked down, I was mesmerized by the beauty of the concrete jungle. Buildings reaching up to the sky, as far as your vision would take you. The tiny but prominent yellow cabs plying the streets and people like insects walking on the sidewalks. The striking green color  of oxidized copper coating the old buildings and the gleaming golden top buildings, to the modern glass skyscrapers- A single field of vision reflected architecture of each decade. In the distance the sharp edge of the Flatiron building captured by thoughts for ensuing minutes. The sheer beauty of something to unconventional and oddly shaped enthralls me every time I pass by the building.

I have a 6×4 feet sized print of this image adorning my wall for a few years now, and it still manages to seize and churn my thoughts and imagination to hours at end. Every time I focus on tiny details, I find something new and a fresh story unfolds. Such is its charm, New York City, sometimes I call it a “sensory overload“, but you just cant have enough of it!
