Empty Gaze

Our face is capable of expressing every possible emotion. A face can tell a story worth a thousand words. And then there are people with poker face, who just don’t impart any information. But I feel they do impart a clear emotion – I DONT WANT YOU TO KNOW.

Well this shot really churns my inquisitive thought process. This lady’s expression. Every time I want to figure out, what was she thinking? This picture was taken in an Amish Country farm fair. There were hoards of people buying various goods, crowding around auctioneers, fascinated by what is being sold and how it is being bought. Walking around carrying all the needed and not so needed purchases, flaunting what they bought. But here’s a lonely stall, with absolutely no one even looking at what she has to offer. She is staring at those crowds flocking at other stores. Well that is evident- but what is she thinking? Did she give up? is she thinking what did I do wrong? Or is she looking down the road, thinking someone from that crowd will notice her lovely stand and drop by. Or is she thinking what if she was selling like everyone else was. Or is she seeing all the young men and women and missing her own children who are not around, or she is missing her grand children seeing all the kids play. Is she thinking of all the good old days when she was young and energetic, buying her desirable things from the fair. There are endless possibilities. And even though its been years since I took this picture, I still am haunted by not knowing what she was thinking. I wish I would have walked to her store and bought a small piece of cheese, would have that made her smile? Would that have lured other people around to check out how her cheese were?

I guess I will speculate over this forever, but I learnt something very important. Never feel shy to walk up and talk or try. I clicked the picture to capture that expression, I could have just walked after that and tried to change it all, may be she would have been chatty enough to tell what was going on in her mind. Aah, the agony!
