Visiting Lancaster, Pennsylvania was a very peculiar experience I must say. It has a significant Amish population. And people go and visit these settlements. The Amish have accepted to live their lives without using electricity and modern machines(if I explain in simple terms), and to promote the area of their settlement as a tourist destination felt extremely awkward. Oh well, we were there for a weekend, staying at a wonderful bed and breakfst. We actually visited an Amish family and their farm and spent time with the family to understand their life, the principles and how they view the new world around them.It was a relief when the head of the family said one of his son decided to leave the amish tradition and become a truck driver- and he was totally fine with that! Guess they are not all that conservative. The background I think was necessary cause this particular picture says beyond just two kids riding a muddy cart. We were visiting a local farm fair, where the Amish community got together and traded everything from horses to agricultural produce. There were many tourists like me. And I saw these amish kids and many more playing in the mud, riding on such carts. And on the other end I could see the tourists’ children walking around with their gameboys and playing on their parents cellphones. It made me wonder wouldn’t the Amish kids want to play these new age games. But the very next second I would think, did this new age of electronics and gaming, where kids spend most of their times in front of computers and TV screens take away the fun of being out in the sun and get dirty in the mud?
